Welcome to Shimnavale Gundogs, my name is Richard Johnston.  I am an A panel retriever judge with the UK Kennel Club and an active competitor and promoter of field trials and working tests.

I purchased my first pup in 1998 and began training the dog as a shooting companion.  The dog was a very natural game finder and in 2001, I won the first trial that both I and the dog ran in.  This dog was FTW Mullagh Lass.

Since then I have successfully trained and competed with six other dogs that have won awards in working test and field trials.  My most successful dog is International Field Trial Champion Terminane Aisling of Shimnavale (Holly).  She won more than 80 awards in Field Trials and working tests.  Importantly, I have trained these dogs from they were eight weeks old and the results are all due to my own efforts and training.

I am now competing with FTCH Shimnavale Excalibur and have been part of two winning international teams with him – the UK team and the Irish team and have won a novice and four open trials.  He is a great game finder and we are very proud of him.

I am also the Secretary for the Ulster Gundog League, which runs circa 10 Field Trials and  2 working tests each year for Retrievers, Spaniels and Pointers and Setters (see http://ulstergundogleague.wordpress.com/).
